Have a Heart – Give Blood at Peabody Place

Blood Donation Competition for Lifeblood

MEMPHIS, Tennessee, February 2, 2006 – Lifeblood and Peabody Place Entertainment and Retail Center are hosting a competition among downtown and Midtown businesses to see which company can donate the most blood. The competition will run February 9-14 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. (excluding Sunday).

The company that donates the most blood will win a $500 gift card from Jillian’s. Individuals can also donate blood or choose to donate in the name of a specific company. Participants in the drive will receive a free Lifeblood T-shirt, Peabody Place VIP cards and will be entered into a drawing to win Lifeblood gift packs. Registration for the blood drive will take place in the atrium of the Peabody Place Entertainment and Retail Center. The winning company will be announced Tuesday, February 14 at 3 p.m.

“We wanted to do something this year to tie in with Valentine’s Day that encouraged people to give back to the community,” said Andrew J. Groveman, senior vice president of Belz. “Lifeblood was a perfect fit for us. We really want people to open up their hearts this year and help save lives by donating blood.”

On any given day, Lifeblood’s local volunteer donors provide just about 50 percent of the blood needed to support patients. Lifeblood relies on purchasing blood from other cities to meet the needs of Memphis’ hospitals. Unfortunately, in the Mid-South someone needs a life-saving blood transfusion every five minutes.

“Thousands of patients depend on Lifeblood’s volunteer donors every day for blood to help with their treatment and recovery,” said Margaret Ryan, CEO of Lifeblood Foundation. “Thanks to the support we receive from our community and partnerships with organizations such as Peabody Place Entertainment and Retail Center, we can fulfill our promise to these patients – and ensure that blood will be there when they need it.”

All Lifeblood donors can learn about their blood Type and also receive complimentary cholesterol checks. Donors receive individual identification numbers that they can use on Lifeblood’s website – www.lifeblood.org – to obtain their cholesterol results about two weeks after they donate. New results are posted after every subsequent Lifeblood donation so that donors can track their results over time.

Blood donors must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 lbs. and be in generally good health. For more information, or to make an appointment to donate blood at this event, contact Lifeblood at (901) 529-6320.
